Why do we buy shares when we should be selling?

Financial author William Bernstein believes that evolution has hard-wired humans to be social animals, who tend to want to do what other people are doing. So we buy when others buy, and sell when they sell. This makes markets very unstable and volatile, and leads us to do the wrong thing at the wrong time.
