Why is it so hard to pick the next star fund manager?

Finance Professor Ken French gives two reasons why it's hard to know who the next star fund manager will be: firstly, returns on securities are volatile and difficult to predict, which is why they're traded; and secondly, every other investor is looking for the next big name too, and as soon as they are found, money floods in and their expertise is diluted.
